Description: Vintage TINDER MUSHROOM Rustic Doily / Wall Decor Handmade Transylvania KOROND This unusual and unique item can be used as a doily or as a wall hanging - it is at least 22 years old but was never used. Please see the provenance explanation below.It measures approximately 10.25" x 6" and weighs approximately 0.9oz. It looks and feels like a very soft suede.We only have 7 other similar pieces in our store. They embody the feel of rustic decorative objects one would expect to see in a Transylvanian mountain cabin in years past (albeit with added artistic flair). The natural variations of the organic matter and the hand crafting lend them character and uniqueness.These unusual pieces were hand crafted by artisans in Korond (Corund) - Transylvania - Romania. Korond is actually known for its 600-year-old pottery tradition - we have a few beautiful Korond pottery items in our store, as well. Aside from its unique pottery traditions, Korond is also the only place in Romania known to process what is known as the "tinder mushroom / fungus" via creative, unusual and unique crafts, done by hand from start to end. These tinder mushrooms grow on beech or birch trees. They are carefully removed, then peeled and thinly sliced. These slices are further thinned and stretched with a mallet. They then get trimmed in the desired shapes, cut, embossed, painted - as needed. Other examples of the resulting crafts include small purses, hats, bookmarks, ornamental objects. Look for 2 sensational, rustic wall clocks with whole tinder mushroom accents in our store!**** About the provenance of this item ****This item is part of a group of hand made textiles, hand carved wood, hand blown glass, and hand made ceramics that was acquired about 23 years ago from Romania (most from the Transylvania region) for a store our family operated in Ohio. Eventually, the store closed, and all remaining merchandise ended up boxed up in storage in a relative's climate controlled warehouse, until our eBay store received them just recently. While we may have more than just one piece of a certain style, for the most part: 1. they will be only a few at best; 2. each of them will be unique; 3. once they are gone they cannot be replenished. All these items reflect, one way or another, some aspect of the Romanian cultural heritage - and its appreciation for the creativity, uniqueness, imperfections and charm of hand crafted wares over the monotony and volumes of the assembly lines.Thank you for visiting our store, we appreciate your interest and business!
