Description: Yes, you can digiscope with an older spotting scope and the latest DSLR! Very difficult-to-find camera adapter for older (pre-Geoma) Vixen spotting scopes; also perfectly fits older scopes manufactured by Vixen for Celestron and Bushnell (e.g., Spacemaster I/II)Specifications: length, 3 inches retracted; weight, 3.8 oz Compatible with contemporary DSLR T-rings as well as older film SLR T-rings Compatible with older (pre-Geoma) Vixen fixed focal length eyepieces (see separate NRO listings); not compatible with Vixen screw-in zoom eyepieces Use requires camera-specific T ring (T ring is not included in this listing)NRO tested this adapter with good digiscoping results with a 20X Vixen eyepiece attached to a Vixen 60-mm spotting scope (see photo series of results; also see separate NRO listing for Vixen 45-degree 60S scope and Vixen 60S scope). Tips on digiscoping: Keep eyepiece magnification low. Vixen specified use of Camera Adapter ST only with 15X, 20X, and 25X eyepieces. If you're shooting through an old film SLR or a DSLR with a full-frame sensor, the telephoto effects and F-stops should correspond to those etched on the adapter body; thus, when using a 20X eyepiece and a full-frame camera, the adapter provides focal lengths of about 1,000 mm when fully retracted or 1,500 with the adapter extended to the first white line. (Note: the suggested shutter settings listed in the bottom left-hand corner of the page from the Vixen brochure shown in the photos were intended to guide photographers using ISO100 or ISO400 film but may still be useful information for DSLR photography.) If, however, you have a non–full-frame DSLR sensor, the camera sensor–specific crop factor comes into play. For example, Canon's EOS APS-C cameras have a crop factor of 1.6; therefore, with the same 20x eyepiece the practical telephoto effects are boosted to 1,600 mm with the adapter fully retracted and 2,400 mm when set at the first white line — a reasonable range for digiscoping with good to excellent results. Unless you have a full-frame camera, use the adapter in fully retracted position or only slightly extended for reasonable telephoto effect. Mount scope on sturdy tripod, shoot in manual mode using camera's LCD display to focus, and use a remote shutter release (easily obtained for around $25) to minimize camera shake. In NRO testing, setting camera at ISO 800 with 1/60 shutter speed worked well. Thanks for visiting Nippon Rare Optics!Premium optics sourced from Japan ▪ Fast, free shipping from U.S.-based seller
