Description: VTG DONNA ELIAS KEY WEST LIGHTHOUSE LITHOGRAPHHAND SIGNED CERTIFICATE #420 FRAMED Up for your consideration is a great find in art. This lithograph is of the Key West Light it wasbuilt in 1825 in Key West. Florida. The Collectors SeriesGreat American Lighthousesby Donna Elias America's first lighthouse was built in 1716 on LittleBrewster Island in Boston Harbor. Lighthouses wereand still are, important tools to navigation. Theirproliferation in the 18th and 19th centuries openedour ports and waterways to the world and guidedcountless ships to safety. At first they were significantonly to the seamen who so desperately depended uponthem but soon their beauty and vigilance would be noticedby many. They have been written about by scholars, romanticized by poets and used metaphorically inmany speeches by politicians. Today Americans remain intrigued by these structuresof brick and mortar. Their lure? Perhaps it's simplytheir architectural beauty that draws us. Perhaps it'sthe breathtaking settings upon which they are often built:rocky coasts, remote islands or long stretches of sandy beach.Maybe it's their maritime history and the memory of heroiclightkeepers fueling lamps in vicious storms. Combine thesesentiments and their attraction seems obvious, for lighthousesare beautiful, proud structures, life savers and monumentsof American determination and ingenuity.ABOUT THE ARTIST: Donna Elias was born and raised on the Jersey Shore.
