Description: Tube audio excellence. The VTL 225 was a highly reviewed and highly-rated tube powerhouse that dominated the high fidelity firmament in the 1990's. The amps were owned and used as reference by a number of audio reviewers. Designed by David Manley, the VTL 225W Deluxe monoblock power amplifier is a top-of-the-line unit that delivers supremely high-quality audio. There were two versions of the 225: 1) EL34; and later 2) the KT90, which sounded more dynamic and muscular. The amps for sale are the KT90 version! The amplifiers were made by Vacuum Tube Logic (VTL) in the United States founded by a father and son team - David and Luke Manley. The units have a serial number of AMD2255837 & 5838. The pair are perfect for those who require a built-like-a-tank and powerful tube amp to drive their demanding speakers to their exalted highest sound quality!. VTL continues today under the same brand -- now headed by Luke Manley. In pristine cosmetic and working condition, with upgraded output transformers by VTL, used for about two months thereafter, then packed in its original factory boxes and stored in LP GEAR's airconditioned office for over 15 years. It was just back from testing, bias setting, power supply and circuit board inspection, chassis and tube socket cleaning and actual listening at Audio Expert Repair in Las Vegas (see copy of receipt for description of work). These units still possess the original VTL KT90 tubes since they have only been gently and sparingly used for in-home testing of cartridges and styli. The VTL225's Tonal PurityThe most immediate and striking characteristic of these amplifiers is their total lack of veiling, especially in the midrange. The midrange had a present quality so real it was eerie. It was as though the instruments are in the room. The tonal and harmonic "rightness" of these amplifiers added a new dimension to the listening experience. Music sounded smooth and natural, with instrumental timbres portrayed without annoying coloration or edginess. Textures were liquid and velvety, but not overly romantic. The palpability of instruments they presented is astounding. The VTL 225's took depth of soundstage further by presenting some instruments right in front of the listening chair. The soundstage was so open and transparent that the amplifiers seemed to disappear, leaving only the music. The presentation was forward and immediate. The VTLs' tonal purity removes the veil between the music and listener, and to the astonishing front-to-rear spatial perspective they portray. Two notes of caution: (1) All tube amplifiers, VTLs in particular, must never be driven without a load attached. In fact, the power should be left off if they are not connected to the loudspeakers. In addition, when changing speakers or cables, they should be first turned off. (2) Two strips of metal over the amplifier protect the tubes from physical hazards. One is tempted to use these as handles, but David Manley insists they are not designed to support the weight of the amplifier. To lift the amp, we suggest two people holding each side of the the bent corners of the metal strips.
