Description: Warne - The Observer's Book of Aircraft - 1949 Edition - Original Dust Jacket I am pleased to offer for sale a good copy of the 1949 Edition of Frederick Warne and Co's 'The Observer's Book of Aircraft.' This followed on from the original and two enlarged reprints of the title 'Airplanes' published during wartime and was the last in the original series by Joseph Lawrence before it was restarted again with a new first edition in 1952 with authors Green and Pollinger. The dust jacket is substantially complete but has small areas of loss at the peripheries. The jacket comes in a high quality removeable see-through plastic covering with white backing paper. It is a little grubby and marked but is ORIGINAL The boards are in good condition with a few spots of fading. The inside pages have been checked for any obvious faults and I can confirm there are no enthusiast notes or marks in ink or pencil anywhere to be found. There is, however, a neatly tippexed out signature of a previous owner on the front inner endpaper. There are also some very occasional grease marks and faint paper creasing on the inside pages but on the whole this is not very noticeable but I mention it for completeness. There are some helpful introductory pages for the spotter which were not included in later editions, including a flow chart showing the arrangement of the book and a three view line drawing of a typical twin-engined bomber. USA designations for aircraft types and International Aircraft Markings are also featured in the introductory pages. As in later editions, each aircraft type is represented using a double-page spread with a photo and technical data and in most cases a three-view silhouette, although occasionally this is missing where one was not available. The silhouettes are good but are inferior to Dennis Punnet's drawings which feature in the later editions. For a broad representation of aircraft that were in service and under development in the late 1940s, this is a very useful guide and if you are an airliner enthusiast, covers some interesting machines such as the Avro Tudor, Airspeed Ambassador, Short Sandringham, Republic Rainbow, Handley Page Hermes, Convair XC-99 and Bristol Brabazon as well as many military and research aircraft such as the Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing. I have priced it very reasonably considering its general scarcity and the fact that the Dust Jacket is an original and not a photocopy or scan. It would certainly be a bargain for an Observers Book collector. Postage to UK locations is free and the book will be sent to the purchaser by Royal Mail Second Class Small Parcel. Purchasers from overseas locations will be subject to the usual costs associated with the ebay Global Shipping Program. Thanks for looking!
