This success, however, was to be short-lived. Following the Restoration, the two powers clashed again and, in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-67), it was the Dutch who triumphed, burning the English fleet in the Medway and forcing Charles 11 to sue for peace. This peace was only temporary, and the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-74) proved a well-balanced and bitterly fought naval contest. This was a revolutionary era for naval warfare in terms of naval tactics, armament, and warship design. The ships that sailed to war in 1652 were by-products of an earlier age - warships designed to fight chivalrous duels with their enemy counterparts.
