Description: This highly unusual etching, based upon the design of Petrus von Avon, is exquisitely executed by Wenceslaus Hollar, acknowledged as one of the master engravers in 17th century Europe. In this piece particularly notable is his rendering of the massively muscled child figures. Pictured are Jesus on the right, embracing John. Three anonymous cherubs and a sheep appear on the left. The print is #495 in Pennington's Catalogue of Hollar's prints. The etching is 8 1/8 x 4 7/8, with the plate marks trimmed off. Otherwise, this engraving is clean and beautifully pulled from the plate. Based upon the hand laid paper on which it is printed, done in the 18th century. (Thats my best guess). There is some slight discoloration on the edges where a mat must have been, but this is very slight and does not affect the overall appearance of the image. The image was bought from an art dealer in New York City in the late 1990s. Any collector with an appreciation of Hollar's mastery will want to own this strongly rendered image.
