Description: Offered is a rare original 1644 Wenceslaus Hollar etching of Sir Anthony Van Dyck. This is Hollar's interepretation of Van Dyck's "Self Portrait With a Sunflower", dedicated in inscription to John Evelyn by Hendrick van der Borcht. Condition is very good. The print was long ago mounted to heavy paper stock and spent unknown decades in a frame with wood backing, thus the toning and knot hole shadowing on the reverse. The print and paper have some overall toning. Ink inscription at the bottom edge of the print ("Dno Johanni Evelino Gene Anglo"). Further research could be done on this inscription and whose hand it might be in. It appears contemporary to the print. Print size is 110mm x 135mm (4-5/16" x 5-5/16"). Overall size with mount is 7-7/8" x 9". Wenceslaus Hollar book is not included with the sale, and the book page photo is for illustration purposes only. An extremely rare, important Hollar work! Will ship USPS Priority with insurance. Please feel free to ask any question you might have prior to bid or purchase. Thanks.
