Roosevelt and Churchill then decided on an invasion of Italy, starting with Sicily. Under General Dwight David Eisenhower, Mark Clark, George Patton and Bernard Montgomery fought their bloody way over the island, on to the mainland and all the way up the peninsula, taking Rome the day before D-Day in 1944.
