Description: The May 8, 1943 issue of Hickam Highlights, a magazine produced by and for the military personnel at Hickam Field on Oahu, Hawaii. Volume 10, #18. Complete, 20 pages plus front cover (the back cover is pages 19-20). Mimeographed, staple-finish. Measures about 8" x 10 1/2". This Mother's Day issue includes a remarkable story of three airmen who were missing in action but survived on a raft, then dodged the Japanese on various islands, and finally found safety on Guadalcanal. Other features are movies, intramural sports, personnel profiles, verse, cartoons, and a racy back-cover ad for war bonds. Of note, one of the new movies playing was Casablanca — now a classic! The staff of Hickam Highlights gave it a thumbs-up. Check our listings for two other issues of this publication, from July and August 1943, under slightly different titles ("APO 953 Highlights" and just plain "Highlights"). Hickam Field on Oahu, Hawaii, later known as Hickam Air Force Base, was a U.S. Air Force installation, named in honor of aviation pioneer Lieutenant Colonel Horace Meek Hickam. The installation merged in 2010 with Naval Station Pearl Harbor to become part of the newly formed Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam. Hickam Field was completed and officially activated on September 15, 1938. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, its planes bombed and strafed Hickam to eliminate air opposition and prevent American aircraft from following them back to their aircraft carriers. Hickam suffered extensive damage and aircraft losses, with 189 people killed and 303 wounded. During World War II, the base became a major center for training pilots and assembling aircraft. It also served as the hub of the Pacific aerial network, supporting transient aircraft ferrying troops and supplies to—and evacuating wounded from—the forward areas. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
