Description: A superb example of thePorcelain Bellproduced for the Third Reich’s XI Summer Olympics Berlin 1936 Adolf Hitler saw the 1936 Olympics games awarded to Berlin (as the 11th Games), to be held at the German capital’s Reichssportsfeld, as his chance to promote his ideals of power & racial supremacy toa watching world at large. There was, however, one fly in the ointment: black athlete Jesse Owens who won 4 gold medals in track & field in front of a less-than-impressed Fuhrer. However, Hitler still got his massive propaganda success, (thanks to the Games being skillfully captured on film by Leni Riefenstahl)with Germany winning 101 medals, including 38 at gold.and heading the medal tables, whilst America came a distant second with just 57 medals. Designed jointly, in 1934, by Johannes Boehland & Walther Lemcke, these commercially-produced souvenir porcelain bells were faithfully based on the massive bronze bellheld within Berlin’s famous Bell Tower. They were very professionally designed, offering several images of The Reich, and marketed as officially state-approved Games souvenirs with, on the front, a German eagle in relief holding in its talons the 5 Olympic Rings whilst on the back, an image of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate On one side of the bell is written, also in relief: 1-16 August 1936 whilst on the other side similarly in raised lettering:11.Olympische Spiel Berlin To complete the design around the bell’s bell’s base runs the famous Olympic slogan“Ich rufe die Jugend der Welt”(“I call the Youth of the World”) Measuring approx. 4” x 4” the original porcelain clapper is still in situ as is a small manufacturer’s mark ofKoengliche Porzellanmanufaktur (KPM) Beautifully mounted on a hand-constructed black wooden frame by the previous owner, along with an originalBerlin Olympics 1936 coloured-enamel official's car badge, which he found in Germany and carefully affixed to thewooden crosspiece to complete the imagery. A most impressive original 1930s German porcelain artefact from the most famous Olympic Games in history, beautifully mounted in recent years to show it off..!
