WWI GERMAN/BAVARIAN M1914 BAYONET ~ REWORKED BY SIMSON & CO FOR GEW 98 ~ RARE

To my bidders: For years I have done business on eBay using the name: gpstorageco*. The items I will be selling from this point on are being sold from my estate and from the estates of friends and relatives. This WWI German/Bavarian Bayonet belonged to a friend of mine who recently passed away. He set aside vintage military items over the years. This blade was on display with his collection of rare variant bayonets. It was directly purchased from a WWI US Army Vet estate decades ago. This particular bayonet was manufactured by Simson & Co during the early 1900's. Originally designated the Greek M1903 and designed for the Greek Mannlicher rifle production ceased after the start of WWI as a severe bayonet shortage required conversion to German use. The bayonet's T-back blade was retained and the hilt was immediately redesigned for the GEW98 (see photos). Some references state that only 8000 were made during the shortage which ran from August1914 to August 1915. Showing average use/wear the blade remains somewhat bright but with areas of graying overall (see photos). The 15.75 inch blade appears sharpened long ago and still has a relatively sharp edge now. Ricasso has makers name (Simson & Co - Suhl) and the rounded underside has a stamped numeral 3 (see photos). Pommel & crossguard have mostly browned overall and the pommel side is stamped with a Bavarian acceptance cypher (see photos). Wood grips were painted black, show considerable use/wear are tight and secured with screws (see photos). Spring loaded release button is present to pommel side, works properly and crossguard is tight - doesn't wobble. The leather bodied scabbard has metal fittings, is clean/solid overall and stitching to the the main seam is tight/intact (see photos). Both fittings have browned overall and remain solidly attached (see photos). Top fitting is stamped with a Bavarian acceptance cypher at the throat (see photos). This is clean WWI German Bayonet by Simson & Co that is rarely ever seen. It shows average use/wear, makes an excellent presentation and is guaranteed to be an original period piece as described. Great opportunity to add to a rare variant to an advanced WWI bayonet collection. Really a tough piece to find with only 8000 manufactured. Only one of these I have seen with the scabbard.
