Description: The item on offer is a Dutch M1940 Marechaussee Sabel (Police Saber ) used by colonial troops in the Dutch East Indies; known locally as a "klewang." After the fall of Holland to Nazi-Germany, European factories were unable to properly supply Dutch colonial forces. Therefore colonial units were forced to make do with spare and locally produced parts. This cutlass was used by land and naval troops for boarding actions and as a machete in thick under brush. The US Navy would later supply a variant of this cutlass ( M 1941 Boarding Cutlass) to remaining Dutch forces in the south Pacific as well as some US Maine units for use as a machete. This cutlass has black Bakelite handles scales instead of wood, a slight variation in blade curve and most brass parts are painted black when compared to the European produced models. There were no makers stamps for this series.
