AND YES WE ARE STILL ONE NATION UNDER GOD!CAPTAIN VETURIS USMC.... SULTAN.....YOU ARE NOW MY PRISONER (FROM THE MOVIE...THE WIND N THE LION) HISTORY OF YELLOW RIBBON Display of a Yellow Ribbon is a sign of loyalty to family, friends or loved ones who are welcome home. Customarily it is used to welcome home men and women who have been away for a long time under adverse or particularly difficult circumstances such as war or prison. Background Did you ever wonder where the Yellow Ribbon Tradition came from? Most Music Historians trace the Custom to a 19th Century Civil War Song. The tradition of wearing yellow ribbons may date back to the Civil War when the U.S. Cavalry was symbolized by yellow piping on their uniforms. Women who were married to or dating soldiers wore yellow ribbons as they waited for their sweethearts to return from battle. It served a dual purpose because of the reputation of the calvary soldier: it kept away unwanted suitors and also provided a threat of reprisal from a calvary soldier should any harm come to his girl. The early song was done for cadence as the soldier rode in formation. Historians believe this practice was commemorated in the 1917 song "Around Her Neck She Wore a Yellow Ribbon." The yellow ribbon debuted on movie screens in 1949 in the cavalry epic, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, starring John Wayne and Joanne Dru. The drama of the undermanned U.S. Cavalry post far out in the Indian country is centered on a veteran captain about to return. It develops into a saga of the Cavalry, its hardbitten men, loyal wives and unusual intrigues. Another story also comes to the folk tradition from that time. Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, was one of the largest of many established prison camps during the American Civil War. It was built early in 1864 after Confederate officials decided to move the large number of Federal prisoners kept in and around Richmond, Virginia, to a place of greater security and a more abundant food supply. During the 14 months the prison existed, more than 45,000 Union Solders were confined there. Of these, almost 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding, or exposure to the elements. Reportedly, a member of the 9th Ohio Cavalry who had been a Confederate prisoner for a number of years wrote to his wife upon his release. To coincide with the Cadence song and the supposed tradition of wearing a yellow ribbon, the man wrote that rather than wear the yellow ribbon she was to tie it to either a signpost or tree that was near the train station. The soldier told the others on the train as they traveled to take the released prisoners of war home about his letter and his not wanting to upset her life without him. The rest becomes a folktale passed down mostly through storytelling and word of mouth. In 1973 Tony Orlando and Dawn cut their number one song of that year and their all-time classic: Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree. It seems the song is a modern rendition of the Andersonville Tale. Folklore has it that the inspiration for the 1973 song came from a true incident that occurred on a bus bound for Miami, Florida. It seems that one of the passengers had just been released from prison and he was bound for home. He had written his wife and let her know he still loved her and wanted to be with her. He asked her to tie a yellow ribbon around the lone oak tree in the Town Square of White Oak, Georgia, if she still had feelings for him and wanted him to be with her. Everyone in the bus asked the Driver to slow down as they approached, there it was! The Driver pulled over and phoned the wire services to share the story. It quickly spread throughout the country. Songwriters Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown wrote the ballad from the news story. And now, "the rest of the story"! L. Russell Brown had the inspiration for writing the song. One late Spring morning he drove 33 miles to Irwin Levine's house and told him the story of the oak tree. It had nothing to do with any convict or news story. It was about a civil war soldier, a stagecoach and yellow (as Mr. Levine would say: "Use your imagination!") handkerchiefs. Irwin changed the yellow handkerchiefs to ribbons so as not to offend anyone with the reality of what makes handkerchiefs yellow! L. Russell Brown and and Irwin Levine updated the story by changing the stagecoach to a bus. L. Russell Brown picked up a guitar and wrote the first eight or so lines of music and lyrics himself. Irwin picked up the ball and wrote the ending: "100 ribbons round the ole oak tree". There was discussion about use of the word damn and then the whole song was written. Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree was released in February 1973. It was the number one hit by April 1973. The song became a hit again in 1981 when the 52 Iran Hostages were returned after 444 days of captivity. The song was played throughout the United States because by then the Yellow Ribbon had become a symbol of loyalty. During the 1991 Gulf War it's popularity again was brought to the forefront as communities saw a way to provide support for the soldiers fighting and the desire for their safe return home. During 9/11, it again is gaining in widespread use. It is expanded to include a message of support to all soldiers away from home along with a statement that they are always welcome and never far from the community's heart. With the current war people are again wearing the yellow ribbon with pride and support of the troops! A LETTER FROM BOOT CAMP.... Dear Ma and Pa, I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. but I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. We all have to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water & no out house! Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, fruit, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food. Tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches," which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice but awful flat. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none. This next one will kill Walt and Elmer with laughter... I keep getting medals for shooting & I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk's head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Every now and then, in the middle of the constant barrage of trash that’s just lighting us all up these days, we come across a story, a feat, an event that just makes us stop in our tracks. This was one for me.... Cody Green was a 12-year kid in Indiana who was diagnosed with leukemia at 22 months old. He loved the Marines, and his parents said he drew strength and courage from the Marine Corps. as ...he bravely fought the battle into remission three times. Although he was cancer-free at the time, the chemotherapy had lowered his immune system and he developed a fungus infection that attacked his brain. Two weeks ago, as he struggled to fend off that infection in the hospital, the Marines wanted to show how much they respected his will to live, his strength, honor and courage. They presented Cody with Marine navigator wings and named him an honorary member of the United States Marine Corps. For one Marine, that wasn’t enough ... so that night, before Cody Green passed away, he took it upon himself to stand guard at Cody’s hospital door all night long, eight hours straight. Nowhere on the face of this planet is there a country so blessed as we to have men and women such as this. I wish I could personally tell this Marine how proud he makes me to be a MARINE!
